Directions – From 81 take exit 140 and turn right at the stop sign at the bottom of the exit ramp.  Follow this road for about 1.5 miles.  You will go through a light at Main Street, continue forward.  You will go through another light, continue forward.  The first street you can turn at after the second light you will make a Left (there is no light or stop sign here).  It is Colorado Street.  Stay on this street for about a mile or so.  You will go through a stop light where the Salem Donut shop is on your right hand side.  Continue forward.  You will go up and over a small bridge.  When you see another stop light coming, there will be a stop sign to the right of the stop light.  You need to go forward to the stop sign and not the stop light (There is an Apple Mart on the corner).  This is still Colorado Street.  Go forward along the sharp turn in the road.  There will be a parking lot on your left hand side, right after that is Salem Wood Apartments, turn left into them.  We are the very first building on your right hand side, building G.

Things to know – our apartment is on the 3rd floor so stairs are involved.  It is 1.5 flights of stairs (one of those set ups a half flight down is the first floor, a half flight up is the second.)  We will have tons of drinks for everyone, ice tea, pop, whatever people want.  We will also be providing food.

If you could drop us a line if you think you could make it that would be great.

Thanx everyone!!

My body needs a better firewall

Yesterday started good. I didn’t feel well when I got up in the morning, but I never feel well if I get up before 10am, so I didn’t think twice about it. In the first half of my work day, I completed the resurrection of a dead Titanium PowerBook with a broken hinge and sheared display wires, which was nice bit of ego-boost.

By lunchtime, I realized that my throat was super sore, and I was pretty dehydrated. I took a break and went to the tiny pharmacy a couple doors down, and came back to work. My nose had started running too, so I grabbed some tissues.

By mid-afternoon, there was no doubt that I was sick. I was coughing, blowing my nose, had a nice headache and serious nausea. Throw in some light-headedness and chills, and you know I was really enjoying myself by that time. I had to reassemble an iBook in that condition, too, which as I’ve mentioned has 50 screws in about 10 different sizes. Literally. I figure it was sinus brought on mostly by over-exerting myself over the weekend and the crappy weather on Saturday.

Finally, work was over, but there was an event I had to attend yesterday evening, to insure I’d be properly prepared for something else happening Saturday. I’d have blown it off, but that would have screwed up the next month’s worth of planning. Only problem? No one had sent me directions yet.

I drove to two places where this group had met before, but they weren’t at either place. In desperation, I did my first bit of intentional wardriving: cruising slowly around the residential neighborhood seeing if my iPaq would pick up an open wireless access point. I actually found one, and confirmed that no one had sent me e-mail, so I gave up and headed home.

The good side of that was that I really shouldn’t have been around all those other people when I was sick, and I was able to head to bed early. On top of that, I got home in time to catch a phone call from raininva before I dropped off, and we talked for a good long time, which cheered me up a lot. On the other hand, my upcoming plans are trashed.

I’m still not well, but I’m better than I was yesterday. I can function, and my throat and stomach are mostly okay. If my nose and head would follow suit, I’d be fine. I might even go down to see Tom at the pub tonight.

Yay for Rain!

Happy birthday to my true love raininva!

Sepiatone Rain

“Wuvv… twoo wuvv…”

(also many happy returns of the day to meiran and amberinside, two more quite keen ladies)

Weekend in western Virginia

Posting from the handheld, since the computer’s back in Virginia Beach. Rain’s off at Origins, and I’m got a kitty magnetically attached to my lap – she hasn’t seen me in two weeks, nor Rain for a couple days. Boy did she cuss me when I walked in.

Brought some card sets up for this evening. I’ll probably get cleaned up and leave for Blacksburg before long. More driving. Good thing my car’s comfy as they go.

It’s interesting trying to read webcomics on the screen of a handheld. I wonder if I could manage to save up for an nice eBay laptop by Xmas, one I can shoehorn OS X onto.

Kitty’s purring.

I just love scanning for pixels

Junkyard Geek got his old Umax SCSI scanner to work on his G4 tonight – a desktop machine that doesn’t approve of third-party SCSI cards, and certainly doesn’t want to talk to obsolete Umax stuff. Luckily, other hackers insist on writing *nix drivers for their obsolete hardware, and some among them are amused by tweaking said drivers to work on Panther (with a little fiddling).

Thanks very much to those who contributed to Rain’s early birthday present. She got an almost unwilling smile on her face, saying, “how dare our friends make my day like that!” Good job, guys 🙂

It was an odd feeling leaving work early on a Tuesday, This may be the first time in 5 years that I arrived home from a Tuesday session while the sun still shone. I’m gonna miss some of my co-workers; at least I know I’ll still get to catch up with VTSFFC and Starfleet folks from time to time.

Cinco ano

As raininva likes to point out, five years ago last night, I was extremely wound up, and hoping I was making the right decision for our future together.

I worked through the tension that night by playing Quake for quite some time. 🙂

These last five years have, without a doubt, been the happiest years of my life. I want to thank not just Rain, but all of the friends who have supported us.

Here’s to many many more!

Reboot!

Ever actually noticed your brain’s chemical balance shift?

I’d been fighting thick, heavy depression for several days, and though the battle was going well by this weekend, the war hadn’t been won. Then yesterday, it was as if I blinked in mid-afternoon and suddenly felt fine, up to dealing with my personal issues and being pleasant company to others around me. I felt the change, it was sudden and slightly disorienting.

Strange how a funk like that can be like a poorly-designed, ill-maintained roller coaster that you didn’t realize you’d gotten on until you’re screaming down the first hill. You don’t want to be on this thing, but you can’t work out any way to get off immediately, and you’ve got to ride it until an opportunity for escape presents itself.

With my 5-year wedding anniversary coming up, and Invisifest to boot, at least I should now be in a frame of mind to enjoy them properly.

Congratulations to jdunson on his birthday Monday, and to raininva for having been WizKids MechWarrior Rules Arbitrator for five days now and not having killed a single gamer fanboy yet! A further hello to the friends page of the filking blog dandelionreport. I look forward to the White Plectrum reunion at Rising Star 12!

Days of Labor

Quite a long weekend. A pretty good one in a lot of ways, but long nevertheless.

Thursday, raininva left for DragonCon to do some contracting for WizKids. Thursday night, after my afternoon nap, I yanked half of my office out into the living room for sorting and re-arrangement. I ended up with a huge plastic storage tub full of gaming stuff that I don’t want to get rid of, but I don’t have room for in the office. That went to the storage along with another tub of loose items; several empty boxes that were just wasting cubic went to the trash, along with two bags full of stuff that just wasn’t doing anyone any good.

Friday through Monday

On a loopy Tuesday

I remember all the summers I spend, back in my school days, sitting around the house and reading because I had no friends to go anywhere or do anything with. Today, for the third time in the last few days, I’ve been invited to something I can’t do because I have a prior social commitment. My modern social life is an improvement over sitting around, but I sure hate to miss some of these parties.

Thought of meiran Friday night – we were in Best Buy (I was checking out the shiny new Macintosh retail goodness) and I saw an English version of the “Read or Die” anime in the DVD section. Might have to rent that eventually.

So: 1) I picked up some virus or something which knocked me flat on Thursday… 2) was still feeling kinda sick Friday, but went out in the evening with raininva and enjoyed her company… 3) still had a cough and some weakness Saturday, but we drove down to South Carolina to see some friends, and stayed up all night gaming… 4) still coughing and a little off Sunday, but I walked all over an amusement park in 90 degree weather and 95% humidity, and rode a few rides – then got drenched to the skin by a sudden downpour, and stayed up late attending a Weird Al concert… 5) got up way too early Monday to drive 5 hours from S.C. right into work… 6) got up way too early this morning to drop Rain off for work, then headed in for my weekly 13-hour shift. This all adds up to 7) if I can still stand up by the time I get home tonight, it will be a minor miracle.
