Feeling like a ‘Prisoner’

All the typesetters here have code numbers that go on the printing plates, to assist with correcting errors. (I’m Number Nine. Turn me on, dead man.)

Still, when one of the pressmen walked in asking, “Who is Number Four?” it was difficult to resist answering, “You are Number Six.”

(Wouldn’t be accurate anyway. Number Six hasn’t come in for the day.)

  • Of course, I just loved the irony of the final episode, wherein Number Six, as always, asks, “Who is Number One?”, and the reply finally gives you the answer everyone has been looking for. It’s the same answer as always, but the emphasis is finally added to the response, and suddenly, you know what it has been about all along. Instead of the usual “You are Number Six”, it is finally said, “You are, Number Six”. (You have to listen very closely, though, to hear the slight inflection that gives it away.)

Oh, by the way, have you ever heard of the “Lost Lennon Party Tapes”? It’s a parody of John Lennon, even though it’s short, and John is saying “number one … number one … number one … CUT CUT CUT!! At this rate, we’ll have to do this EIGHT MORE TIMES!”.

You need a big pennyfarthing badge with a big “9” on it.
