Kinda echoey in here, hmmm?

We had a guest over last night… are having more guests this weekend… and are planning on seeing shrewlet, rhaps, and meiran in the next month. So this last week, we cleaned up the apartment.

Between possibly the most serious cleaning we’ve done since we moved here, and the ongoing stuff reduction program (I need to find shipping boxen for cjmr‘s and rattrap‘s models ASAP), the place looks practically new. The lighting’s better now. I can get into my bed without sidling past bookcases. All of the rooms in the place are suddenly fully usable. Heck, after tonight’s effort I might be able to admit people into my computer office without embarrassment. My ‘house’ is clean.

What an odd experience.

Tonight they start filming a movie here on base. I didn’t quite get around to sending them a glossy, and I’m not sure I’ve got the 70’s look they’re after, so I don’t get to be one of the extras. The film’s got Cameron Diaz in it… somehow I don’t think she’ll be swinging by. All I’m getting out of this is the mandatory opportunity to park my clearly 21st-century car another block-and-a-half from work. Ah, well. Exercise.

Dream A Dream

“What are your dreams?” I was asked. I couldn’t answer – I wasn’t sure.

I’ve been spending a lot of years focused on making it to the next day. If I thought extremely far ahead, I made plans for two weeks away. I’m not saying it was a daily struggle for food and shelter – I’ve been fairly comfortable the whole time. My dreams got little thought, though. I was busy.

What have my dreams been in the past?

– I wanted to be a starship crewman. (Well, I’m working for NASA. Not bad.)

– I wanted to be an experimental particle physicist. (Less interesting to me now as a career, plus I’d need to devote something like 15 years to catch up to that horse.)

– I wanted to be a well-known movie and TV actor. (I’m having plenty of fun, and eating better, doing that as an occasional hobby.)

– I wanted to be an airplane pilot. (After my trip up two Novembers ago, I’ve decided to go after my license as soon as my slowly-increasing savings will support that.)

– I wanted to be a well-known novelist. (Still not impossible, though I’ve done pathetically little toward that dream in the last years.)

There are one or two others, but those are the oldest ones. The next question is, what are my dreams for the future? It looks like some of those carry over, but I ask myself now not only what I want to be, but what do I want to do? (A clearly related matter.)

Worth some introspection.

Onboard computers are now in command of the countdown

I keep being almost-late to work. This is unsatisfactory to me, so I have spent some time identifying the cause in hopes of making changes.

The cause is fairly clear. In order to get to work on time, I must get out of bed at a time of day when my mind is especially fogged and sluggish. Though I keep an eye on the clock, I am repeatedly unable to summon any sense of urgency until I reach the point at which I really should have gotten out of the shower 5 minutes ago. Then I panic, my mind clears, and I efficiently complete my morning preparations and head out the door.

Now, the obvious answer is, “You lamer, get your act together, concentrate, and get moving!” Unfortunately, that’s a bootstrapping problem. Despite repeated attempts, I find myself completely unable to focus or concentrate until that first burst of adrenaline. Though I don’t like drinking soda in the morning, perhaps caffeine pills would help as part of my morning chemistry regimen. (Boy, does that clash with my action-hero fantasies. Dammit, Indiana Jones doesn’t have to hit a pharmacy every 6:30am.)

If they ever offer me that earlier shift, I could be looking at a problem.
