Field Promotion

Technicon, as it is wont to do, is putting on a Whose Con Is It Anyway? show on Saturday. A week ago, I gladly accepted a request to participate. Last night, I discovered I was running it.

Err… I’m not panicking. Really. Is it a compliment to be secretly promoted from Ryan Stiles to (Clive Anderson / Drew Carey)?

Seriously, I’m cool with this, this is just the standard con surprise 🙂 The news was a bit startling, though!

(P.S. It’s now 0930 on 03/28, and the banner on the con home page says that the con starts in 14 hours. If that is indeed the case, i will be a bit late.)

  • Ok … that’s funny, because I had volunteered to run it and was under the assumption I was … hmmm … Either way, it doesn’t matter who runs it, as long as it’s done, right?

Perhaps someone needs to clarify this before I go out and get the few things I had in mind to use as props, etc.

The banner counts down to midnight on Friday, the first day of the con. It was made by one of the guests and I guess he didn’t want to bother us about when exactly opening ceremonies was 🙂

Dude, you sound more prepared than me. Go to it, and I will happily go back to being Ryan for you 🙂 I have plenty on my plate as it is!

I’m sure it’s just standard deadline confusion – happens to all con staffs.

  • I’ll bring my stuff and be ready then. Got a few things in mind.

No, actually Thursday midnight, as in 0000 on Thursday. Thought it WAS Thursday. Gah.

  • And I was just as surprised to be asked to be a contestant, rather than the host.

It does mean you’ve got to do some advance prep. Not a lot, just selecting the games, and who’s in each. And acquire any props needed for the props game. Also it’s helpful to have a list of situations available, so that when you ask the audience , and they give you nothing useable, you have something to fall back on. For games like Party Quirks, I like to prepare envelopes for the contestants and posterboard for the audience to avoid needing to send the Party host out of the room when you reveal the Quirks.

Also, I think you’re more of a Tony Slattery, than a Ryan Stiles.

Of course if you and Keith want to switch roles, I see no reason why not.

  • The only real problem I’m having right now is finding a doorbell and buzzer.

Con in Blacksburg, Programming director in Boston… It’ll work out somehow.

I think I might have had an easier time running it last year than participating as a contestant. 😉

Now, that’s an interesting thing — given that Nathan contacted me and asked me to run Whose Con. 😐 So, methinks we need to shake out the truth of who’s actually running the silly thing. 😀

I should probably amend this with a “This is not a throwdown about who’s running this” comment == most likely because it would sound like an old Simpsons episode:

“What are you guys arguing over?”
“Who wants to run Whose Con more.”
“Well, isn’t that nice? Carry on…”
“You want to run it more!”
“No, you want to run it more!”

For me, it’s more a matter of do I need a volunteer in the video room for two hours or just one? ;D

  • Now that’s a very sound idea, Barb. I think it’s time someone stepped *authoritative* stepped up to the plate and gave the word. Macht nichts, as far as I’m concerned.

  • “This is not a throwdown about who’s running this”

    Agreed, most definitely.

That icon is exactly what will solve this problem… For me, at least.
