“I summon: Mecha-Lawyer Zeta!”

Ever notice how superheroes are reactive, not proactive? Batman doesn’t hunt the Joker down for his unpunished history of crime, but for whatever he did yesterday?

In a related vein, here’s a Power Rangers question for you. Knowledge of the show is not required; here’s a synopsis of a standard episode.

Space witch Rita Repulsa sends a 10-foot rubber monster to the town of Angel Grove as part of her ongoing plan to capture the city. (I can’t remember the reason.) The Rangers must overcome a plot point usually related to teamwork, friendship, or trust to defeat the critter.

Before it can expire, Rita throws one of an endless supply of magic staves from the moon to the monster’s position; the staff explodes and revitalizes the monster, increasing it to 100-foot size. Property damage ensues as it rampages. The Rangers summon their five-piece giant robot, and melee the giant; more property damage, from both sides, occurs until monster is vanquished.

What I want to know is this: if Space Witch Rita can throw magic staves from the Moon to Earth, why doesn’t she use that technology or magic more creatively? She should send twenty monsters, starting in the 100 foot tall versions. Or she could use whatever magic allows her to chuck staves to deliver bombs, or shoot lasers. Or better yet, she could turn away from evil and start a space tourism venture. She could magic people up to the moon and back for $5000 a pop.

    Oh yeah, it’s a kid’s show.

I believe one of the series briefly had a sequence where they confirmed an area was clear for battle.

The variant that made me laugh was when these battles took place on a mobile space colony – you’d think there’d be a major risk of hull breaches…

The MST mantra: “Just repeat to yourself, ‘It’s just a show. I should really just relax.'”

I recall an episode of Power Puff Girls that revealed the highways into Townsville have signs that can light up with “Monster Attack. Expect Delays.”

  • I like how “The Incredibles” actually addressed this issue. And the “Less than Hero” episode of Futurama:

“Congratulations! The value of the Gemerald you saved is slightly greater than the damage you caused to the Museum. A net gain for our fair city!”

And of course, your “Royal Rainbow” icon brings up “Katamari Damacy”, the whole point of which is collateral damage.
