Brief updates

  • 10:43 @lisbet Actually, I found that reading books from the Baen Free Library on an Apple Newton was fairly pleasant. Don’t know about the Kindle. #

  • A friend of mine has a 1st gen Kindle. It’s really rather impressive – I could not discern any blockiness to the letters at all. It looked better than newspaper print. I suspect I could read a book on it with no eye strain.

Still, I’d like to see a faster page refresh when you “turn” the page (it’s about 1/2 second), and I really want to see it with a whiter background for greater contrast.

It’s easy to see that e-ink is the future of paper. 10-20 years from now when it’s black on white (or even full color) along with a touch screen for taking notes, some version of it will be in every office and school. So long to those heavily-laden high school backpacks which some of my children are suffering through right now.

I just picked up an iPhone app which has about 20 classic books already encoded for reading. This will be a quick way for me to judge whether the iPhone is a decent e-book reader, but it’s be pleasantly surprising me so far.
