At work, they call me “The Oracle”
Hmmm… seconds ago I refreshed my friends page, and kittykatya had an entry up about her Sailor Senshi colors. Had to close the window before I could really read the entry… and now it’s gone.
Did the Matrix just glitch on me and I saw part of the simulation that won’t be up for a little while? Or am I just hallucinating again?
Wardrobe
Tuesday night, while waiting for one of my co-workers to catch up with what I’d done, I looked over kittenchan‘s Project A-Kon costuming pics. Really nice work, but I’m a bit disappointed that I only recognized one or two of the anime characters. I’m so out of touch.
I’m also realizing that I miss costuming… I really don’t do it much any more, because of the time and expense, but I probably should, ’cause I love it. Nothing like getting to be an exhibitionist in another skin; free to act totally different for a little while because you aren’t you.
I’m sure a psychologist would have loads of fun with that. 🙂
Anyway, I did go ahead and post my 2000 and 2001 Halloween costumes to my Elfie site, as I’ve been meaning to for ages. (Yes, that includes the maid’s outfit.) If anyone has pics of some of my earlier con or H’ween outfits, please let me know… I can’t find my photo album at the moment, and I’d like to post more – especially the White Tiger Ranger, which I’m kinda proud of.
I do plan to make the party Saturday night, but since Rain will be out of town with my car, I may need a ride… meiran, how would you like some gas money? 😉
Michelle Light is cool!
meiran beat me to it.. I was playing with using my Michelle Light badge sketch as an icon, but I wasn’t quite happy with my Photoshop editing yet.
I did find someone online who could make me a set of pneumatic folding/unfolding eagle wings if I ever want to do an anthro griffin costume. I’m afraid to ask what the cost is, though!
This could get expensive.
According to kittykatya, my friend Denise saw me as Magenta at Technicon‘s showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and commented that I had “legs up to there”.
So, basically, all the compliments on appearance I received last weekend came from: a) the white dinner jacket / black slacks combo, or b) the black vinyl maid’s outfit with the fishnet hose.
Apparently I need to rethink my wardrobe.
Wow, the Internet really is vast and complex!
My Internet access is working again.
Yesterday: “It’s your Ethernet card.” “I have four machines here with cards from three different manufacturers. None of them are working. I don’t think it’s the card.” “Uh, okay, you don’t have your Windows Network control panel properly configured for TCP/IP.” “This is a local intranet consisting of two Windows machines, one Mac, and a BSD Unix box. What do you think I’m configured for, carrier pigeon?” “Uh, okay, your modem’s bad. We’ll send a guy over with a new one tomorrow.” “Fine.”
Today: “Hello, we aren’t going to send you a modem yet, the tech support person you talked to has been screwing up a lot lately. What’s the hardware address on your modem?” “Blah-blah-blah-blah-4C.” “Okay, that the problem, we have it here as blah-blah-blah-blah-4L.” “What? How can you have an L in a hexadecimal number?” “… Just reboot the modem and try again.”
So I’ve got access… and about 300 unread messages. 🙂
A quick comment on meiran‘s cosplay postings: I am still trying to find the picture I had from an old VTSFFC Halloween. It’s myself as Tuxedo Mask surrounded by the Katsucon 1 Sailor Senshi from Blacksburg. The anime freak where I work doesn’t believe me when I tell him I did that, though it’s funny watching him trying to decide whether I’m 1) lame for being in a Sailor Moon costume group, or 2) way cool for being in the company of five women in skirts that short.Interestingly, when you search the web for Sailor Moon cosplayers, you find a lot of men playing the senshi. A quote from one male Sailor Moon: “I get a lot of female attention. Apparently chicks dig the bows.”
A Question of Identity (long-winded)
I’ve been looking at sites about gaming on the Macintosh, and read again an article I’d seen a few weeks ago. Seems that Mark Adams, a well-known Mac gaming figure who runs one of the major porting houses, publically announced New Year’s that she would now be known as Glenda Adams. Yes, she was remaining with her spouse Suellen; yes, she was having the medical therapy to adjust her body to her personal identity, etc. As has happened so often, articles like these get me all philosophical.
Maybe it comes from growing up a fan and being exposed to a lot of outlandish ideas, but for me, identity is all in the head. Nothing external is a true part of your identity – I’ve often tended to think of my body as simply a vehicle which I used to expose my mind to various things. Kind of a small, somewhat fragile, organic BattleMech for my psyche. 🙂
I don’t think of myself as “a brunette” – I just am brunette. I don’t consider myself “a Caucasian” – I just happen to have skin at the paler end of human range. It helped me deal with my Borg replacements better, not to think that I was “losing” part of myself, but just swapping out a broken part. (In fact, I’ve been heard to complain that they could at least have installed the 100 MPH legs while they were in there.)
So I don’t consider myself “a male” – I just happen to be a person in a male body. (Which, btw, I’m quite satisfied with – don’t get me wrong.) People are people, and common courtesy dictates that we let them be who they are, not who we think they should be. I think that if more people would take that into account, we’d have a less stress-ridden society.
This philosphy is what gives me the confidence to wear a vinyl dress to Halloween and freak out some people. :p
Various things I’ve been meaning to post about…
On reading Lord of the Rings: it’s a long, wordy story. It will take you a long time, and you could easily be pretty confused about lots of stuff the first time you read it. It’s also one of the best pieces of fiction I’ve ever read. See, it was written by a man who loved words – words were both his job and his hobby, so he wrote a lot of them. But the world he created, he spent decades building before LotR was published, and that’s one of the most amazing things in it. By the time period of the books, Middle-Earth has an oral history reaching back tens of thousands of years, and parts of that history are directly responsible for current events. It’s not light reading, but it’s a world one can get fully immersed in.
On my favorite Disney rides: Star Tours, Alien Encounter (way cool), Rockin’ Roller Coaster, Test Track, and The Haunted Mansion (we will make out on that ride someday, Rain!) and those are just the first five. Disgustingly, that place is just as much fun as all their propaganda says it is. 🙂
I still don’t know what “oekaki” is.
Everyone still freaks out when they see my beardless face for the first time, but I ought to have enough chin shadow by Rising Star to be respectable. Rain insists she was unaware she’d married a 17-year-old. I have to admit something, I got a little nervous about that costume being a bit “over the top” on the drive over to the party, but I got pretty good reactions from everyone. I should stop worrying so much.
As I am a card-carrying lemming, (“Let’s go!!”), here’s my job test:

… I think “Iron Filk” is as close as I want to get to chef, and I’d never be a salesperson, but the list is interesting nonetheless.
Biography trivia answers to be posted soon!
I’m running behind – so you know everything’s normal
There’s a lot of posting I have to do, I have to post the answers to my quiz, and I’m thinking of answering the alphabet quiz too. Maybe I’ll post Lisa’s pics of my Halloween costume – and maybe I won’t LOL.
Until then, here’s the secret code for Rain: five – eight – six – dot – two – eight.
Hey Mary, tell f42 it was great to meet them all! 🙂
“I never could get the hang of Thursdays.”
Heck of a week so far… work has just been nasty. I am seriously considering killing one of my co-workers and sticking her head on a pole next to my desk as a warning to others.
Oh well… my new camera’s coming soon, my Halloween costume finally arrived, I get to go home early today, and tomorrow’s Friday, so it’s not all bad.
I am jealous of Vond – I always wanted to fly a plane. Once Rain is running her own megacorp, maybe I’ll buy one. 🙂
