Good quote

I wish I’d seen this one in time for trenn to make me a button of it for Rising Star:

“A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.” -Herm Albright

My hometown newspaper made someone’s blog! I’m so proud.

Decipher officially launched the WARS game yesterday – I even showed up in the staff pic on the web site. (Green shirt, right side, partially obscured.) The sense of optimism and excitement was very high… unlike all the licensed properties from our past, this is our baby and practically everyone in the building had a hand in it.

I’m really glad I’ve taken this job.

Edit: There seems to be a problem with the link to the staff pic. Going to “http://warstcg.fanhq.com“, clicking on “Articles” in the right-hand sidebar, and clicking on “Happy WARS TCG Release Day From the Gang at Decipher!” should show the pic.

Geekery, sappy and comedic

I was lucky enough to be near a broadband connection yesterday when SpaceShipOne went up again. The live feed from the small rear-mounted camera was breath-taking: no movie effects, no footage released by NASA months later; the viewers were all stowaways, participating in this ride.

No thunder, flames, pieces designed to fall off; yesterday some guy just got in a plane and went up to space for a bit, just like all the science fiction said would happen. It doesn’t hurt that his launch system looks like Hayao Miyazaki and Gerry Anderson went out drinking together one night.

You know why I like this setup – both launches have suffered control problems, and both times, it didn’t matter. It was a minor inconvenience, not even as major as a flat tire in a car. That’s the sort of ride I’d feel good about, over a system “guaranteed” to have no issues at all. Leonardo DeCaprio and Kate Winslet learned a truth about systems that “can’t fail”.

In unrelated news, mollyringwraith has posted “Lord of the Rings told in lines from Star Wars“. You should check it out.

GANDALF: Lord Saruman. I should have known. Only you could be so bold. The Wizard Senate will not sit for this, when they hear you’ve attacked a poor little–
SARUMAN: Don’t play games with me, Gandalf. You weren’t on any pipeweed mission this time. You passed directly through a magic-infested area. Several transmissions were beamed to this tower by palantir. I want to know what happened to the Ring you found.
GANDALF: I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m a friendly old wizard on a diplomatic mission to Hobbiton…
SARUMAN: You’re part of the western Alliance, and a traitor. Take him away!

Ooops, almost forgot my towel

Back a few years ago, there was a a BBC Radio program called “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” broadcast in two Phases of 6 episodes each. This program spawned two novels (with a slightly altered plot), a computer game (with a further altered plot), a TV series (with a even more altered plot), a towel (with no plot to speak of), and an upcoming Hollywood film (three guesses).

There were three more “Hitchhiker’s” novels which have not been adapted into any other form and thus needed no plot alterations… until now. BBC Radio has posted streaming audio of Phase Three, Epsiode One on their “Listen Again” website. Episode Two will be streamed live tomorrow, and posted to “Listen Again” sometime Thursday.

If you have a little trouble following the plot at the beginning of the first episode, worry not. We all are (see above).

It’s a… uhh… bunker! Yeah!

All the Battletech players, Clix players, Warhammer 40K players, and modelers on my friends list need to read today’s Dork Tower.

(hmm… that’s a big chunk of my friends list, isn’t it…)

Gentlethings, start your engines

While browsing through the list of announced GenCom games, I hit Cthulhu 500, the game that combines Lovecraft with NASCAR.

Mythos Motor Sports Madness: The Cthulhu 500 card game puts you in the driver’s seat for a frenzied race that mixes the madness of HP Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos and the insanity of motor sports. Rev up your Satanic Pushcart’s Engine Of The Damned, mount your Radials From Beyond Space And Time, and take a Dreamlands Shortcut to win the race for The Sponsor That Must Not Be Named. The driver in the lead when the Checkered Flag card is drawn celebrates victory by devouring his opponents! 3 to 8 players – Ages 8 and up – 30 to 60 minutes

Why does this sound like it was target-marketed right at some of the people I game with?

I thought I’d been feeling more mellow than usual

We regret to announce the untimely demise of Mikhail, who on the 19th of April of this year was savagely bored to death by passing aliens. This unfortunate incident occurred in an anthill behind an outhouse. The deceased was reported to have shouted “Cripes!” just before expiring. Mikhail is survived by a bunch of cats, who could really care less. Funeral services will be held the 3rd of next month.
