Costuming at RavenCon — 72 Comments

  1. It’s con. Have you taken a serious look at con-goers these days? I mean, they aren’t ones to talk about people dressing funny or acting weird. I think you’ll be fine. Auntie Glen was running around in a skirt and heels at cons in this area long before you came along. πŸ˜‰

  9. Well, I don’t know Auntie Glen, but a friend who was trying to look out for me suggested that I rein it in at Farpoint – that folks would indeed freak out. (Not that I had any time for hall costuming.) And I’d probably restrain myself at West Virginia’s Rising Star, as well. So I’m just trying to be mildly polite.

On the other hand, I met some really cool people at TCon specifically thanks to my
costume. So, I’m still not planning to give it up.

  17. Auntie Glen has better legs than me and I can honestly say that one time I didn’t recognize him in pants.

Farpoint is more conservative, which isn’t the right word, maybe less “alternative-lifestyle aware” as there are a lot of people there who are low on the social skillz so they aren’t exactly “normal”. But I doubt anyone would freak out or complain if you wore a dress. Helen and her erotica writer’s group have a booth there so it’s creeping in. Oh and there was leather kilt and corset guy.

Plus you have the right to wear whatever you want to wear as long as it is legal. You don’t dress trashy, flaunt your guy bits, or get in people’s faces about your outfits. Heck, I’d wager that there would be some people at RavenCon who are so wrapped up in their own little world that they wouldn’t notice a guy in a dress even if RuPaul herself came sashaying down the hall. You wear what you are comfortable with and what makes you happy. What right do people have to say that you can’t wear it?

  25. The one year I went there was a little bit of cosplay but nothing to the extent that you do. This year the con is at a hotel on what we call the southside of town (south of the James River). It’s sort of a snobby part of town but not completly uppity. (there is an adult store about 1 block from the hotel) Being that you are mostly covered you may be okay but be prepared to change if needed.

I can’s take the whole weekend off due to vacation 2 weeks later but I might try to get Saturday off and swing by con for the day.

  33. I say wear it – Alice is popular right now – and at the top of a lot of people minds.
If I, as a cute fat chick, can wear a short skirt and a corset showing all my back fat – then you by all means should wear whatever you want. I for one find your costume much more appealing to the masses than my suggested costume.

Besides – wasn’t everything just a bit sideways in wonderland?
